The one that’s sustainable for an indefinite time. The one you can adopt as a lifestyle, not just as a temporary solution.
That’s the short and true answer of it. Whether that means that you are going to cut out a whole group of foods (which I personally don’t recommend) or you’re going just to cut down on portion size it depends on your preferences. The important question is how long can you keep it up. As I mentioned, it has to be preferably an indefinite solution.
You can always go for the latest fad diet and lose some weight, but if that’s going to rebound it is no good.
What are the basic principles and what would a good diet be? Well, according to the research and best practices it still is:
- a diet rich in vegetables and fruits
- whole grains
- lean meats
- fish, at least 2 times a week
- try to have protein in every meal to keep you satiated
- small portion size
Whatever you choose for the specific foods is not as important as much as it is to adhere to those principles. Seems really easy and common sense, but you would be amazed how many people fail to stick to those basic rules. Believe me, that’s what works in the long term. I eat a salad with lunch and dinner and have protein at every meal, while still being conscious not to overeat. Keep it up and the results will come.
